When I crafted my original website beginning in 2000, I had three categories of web pages — travelogues of the places I visited, navigation pages for countries or regions to help users browse through the travelogues on the site, and Features that were either travelogues of events distributed to multiple places or stories that were unique or interesting.
I only posted maybe 1/3 of the Features that I actually collected during construction of my original 2001 website, and none of the weirder stories made it. I am trying to correct that as I have found several of those old stories in my archives.
Check back routinely as I add Features to this site — they will not appear in any pre-planned order.
This is the story of a train ride that did not go well for me. It was one of my first train rides outside of Germany, and I found myself having to deviate from the itinerary and getting stuck at a border town in Hungary. It turned out to be a blessing, one that built some confidence in my abilities to navigate Europe by train.
This is the experience of attending Slovenia’s home leg in this pivotal two-leg match for a European spot in the World Cup Finals. Slovenia came from behind to win the first leg 2-1. The 1-1 draw the following Wednesday secured Slovenia’s first-ever World Cup berth.
This is the rest of the story about how I actually got in the gate. I hadn’t purchased a ticket, figuring I might be able to get one at the venue. This may or may not have been a good idea, as I did get a ticket — not from the ticket sales but from a group of hooligans from the eastern city of Maribor.
